History of the Band

Stardust Big Band was formed in December 2008 and runs as a not-for-profit community big band; having previously been called The Perry Parsons Big Band (PPBB) originally formed in 2002 under the direction of Perry Parsons.  When Perry stepped down as Musical Director in March 2008, the band was re-launched under the new name "Stardust Big Band".

The origins of the band can be traced back over 20 years when in 1988 Perry Parsons (a history teacher) decided to indulge his personal passion for jazz by setting up the Vyners Swing Band. This was purely an experiment to give some students the opportunity to enjoy and perform swing and jazz music.  VSB went from strength to strength, its numbers swelling alongside its repertoire, building a renowned reputation, which continues at the school to this day.

Performances ranged from appearances at shows, schools and fetes, to local and national charity events.  By its 20th anniversary, the combined bands of VSB and PPBB had raised well in excess of £100,000 for various charities.  As well as entertaining audiences at home, the bands have enjoyed successful tours of France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
